Dylan spoke to Cosmo nigh Banana Split (out on demand today) and the upcoming Afterward sequel. Fair warning, his girlfriend Barbara Palvin occasionally chimed in.
How are y'all doing right at present? Are yous hanging in there?
Hanging in there, yes. Trying to stay inside as much equally possible. I fabricated a big supermarket trip before the lockdown happened in New York, and Barbara and I are spending so much time together, which is actually, despite the circumstances, it's actually squeamish.
Yeah, I bet that's nice! What are you doing to pass the fourth dimension?
Well, the new Animal Crossing came out, and then we're playing a lot of Crossing and catching upward on all the shows we missed this year. We're also playing games, just talking, trying to go organized, all the things we didn't actually have time for.
Have you watched or read anything you're excited about?
We started this new anime that we really like called Haikyu!!, which is a funny volleyball anime, funny enough. Besides that, it'southward been a lot more video game playing than watching stuff. I know it's sacrilegious to say it but both of us have not seen Parasite yet.
Oh my god, you're going to love it. Only let's talk about your movie, Banana Split up. What drew y'all to the role of Nick?
I found the script was effortlessly funny and a nice innovation on a genre that tends to stagnate. I thought Nick was interesting in that he almost kind of seemed like a villain throughout it, merely and then you larn to really empathise with him.
Without spoiling anything, the ending of this film kind of leaves your character in the dust. How did y'all feel about that?
Nick is not the main character—you're almost led to believe that he's going to have much more of a part in this than he's supposed to have. You're led to believe at that place's going to be this groovy redemption. This story is then much more than virtually agreement what yous think you want and need as yous movement into the next phase of your life when yous're 18 years onetime, and all of them did that toward the end, right? Even Nick.

Yous mentioned before that this genre tin can feel kind of brackish sometimes. What is a stereotypical rom-com plotline y'all'd love to never see once more?
Hmm. [Turns to Barbara] What exercise you call up, babe? You like rom-coms. What's something you'd never want to see once again in a rom-com? Oh! Barbara brought up something that we've talked about in the past which we discover funny, which is that rom-com stereotype that like, the daughter'southward ugly, and now she'due south got to go pretty in order to go what she wants. And then like she but takes off her spectacles and straightens her hair and of a sudden she's like a beauty queen. That's something that nosotros'd both like to put to bed in the rom-com industry forever.
I couldn't agree more. Tell Barbara that'south a great choice. Yous play a high schooler in this moving-picture show, and IRL, you're older than that. I know actors do this all the time, only what'southward it similar going dorsum to that age?
Both my brother and I tend to look a lot younger than nosotros are. Information technology's something that a lot of people, even as audience members, take just gotten used to, watching adults play 17-, eighteen-year-olds. Simply I think the manufacture is hopefully moving away from that.
You're besides in the After sequel, Later on We Collided . What can fans await from your character, Trevor?
He's everything Hardin isn't. He'southward piece of work-oriented. He has a lot of upward mobility. He's intelligent. He's kind of snarky and quick-witted, and in a lot of ways, he represents a safe beloved interest for our lead, Tessa. This is what Trevor embodies, while too not being besides confrontational. Trevor is actually 25 in the story, whereas most of the characters are in college.
He's kind of the perfect nemesis, nearly unknowingly, for Hardin, because he just doesn't have any of the same issues Hardin has. And I think the readers and the watchers volition be really pleased to come across how this motion picture comes out. So they should await a really fun ride that too answers a lot of the concerns and questions the audience had when watching the commencement 1. I remember information technology's just a really fun picture.
